Dell Announces Private Cloud Built On OpenStack 14
Nerval's Lobster writes "At this year's Dell World conference, Dell announced that its new private cloud will be based on the open-source OpenStack, an Infrastructure-as-a-Service developed by Rackspace and NASA that launched in 2010. Dell released a statement supporting the open nature of OpenStack: 'While Dell will continue to offer outstanding overall solutions for any type of cloud that customers want to run, the company believes the open and compatible nature of OpenStack allows customers to take advantage of hybrid capabilities to move workloads between private and public clouds.' Michael Dell did not disclose the reasoning behind the decision. Back in 2011, his company announced that VMware technology would provide the foundation for its first public cloud. VMware also sits behind the Dell Cloud Dedicated Service, which delivers managed private cloud IaaS."
Seems clear enough (Score:5, Informative)
OpenStack is the only thing in the industry that has any momentum. If there's going to be an open ecosystem of management tools cloud-based applications, etc it is far more likely to evolve around OpenStack than anything else.

Dell's private cloud (Score:1)
Ten years ago when I last ordered something from Dell, I envisioned an enormous private IT cloud when I called their customer support the second time to find out why I hadn't received my $150 rebate check (the first time they said they hadn't received my form, so I had to make another copy and send it in again).
I never got my rebate. The same CEO that designed that service is evidently in charge of this one, so I'm not enthusiastic.

Sorry but a missing $150 consumer rebate really isn't worth their time to worry about. Big business customers that spend millions, they do care about them.
Just part of the game, the goal is to never lose sight of where you are in the game.

Jesus, the smugness is this thread is worse than a Prius factory. Everyone is piling on about not buying Dells.
The thing is that, everywhere I go, all I see is Dells. Dell on the desktop, racks full of Dells in the server rooms(er. private cloud datacenters). Sure, I see HP having a big foot print in the more well heeled companies, but Dell is plenty strong.
So, what are all you hipsters buying these days as you claim Dell is passe?

Actually, we're just as you describe, tons of Dell in the computer room and on the desktop. No real troubles with any of it, and anything that needs to be replaced is quickly handled.
