(I know this is offtopic, but this is the only way to be heard.)

Once again, our esteemed Zonk posts a story, and then yanks it.

"Military MMOG Expiriments", posted by Zonk...

"Nothing for you to see here...please move along."

What the FUCK is wrong with you, Zonk? Either post a story, or don't (preferably the latter), but DON'T post it and then yank it.

Why is this so damned difficult for you to understand???

People, I'd appreciate it if you would take a little time out from posting on the topic to post below your feelings on this matter. And Zonk, If you'd like to post as well, I'm sure we would all appreciate an explanation.

agreed, it is totally unacceptable for Zonk to pull this shit. ESPECIALLY if there were comments on the article already. I have seen that happen too. In fact, once i was responding to on of the comments and when i tried to send it through i got some sort of an error. When i went back to respond again, guess what -- no article. WTF? I am prevented from having a discussion with someone now, just because Zonk doesn't want to appear incompetent?

Well, it is too late for that. I was never really too sold

While we're on the WTF wagon, I suggest that Zonk also stop posting every fucking rumor about next gen consoles and upcoming games?

remember it's NEWS FOR NERDS, not CONJECTURE FOR HALFWITS. Rumors aren't news, they're RUMORS.

I swear I come to /. anymore just to see ridiculous shit. It's to the point where I expect to see "Xbox2 project manager burps, does this mean it'll have a hard drive?"

  • All the games with videogame licenses are sucktastic? Do we get to see Spongebobs Great Adventure when best video game category? And then get to see the award plastered on the box cover in the $4.99 section of Wal-Mart?
    • All the games with videogame licenses are sucktastic?

Nothing happens - cause that basically covers 95% of the movie-based games.

The only reason you see "low-quality" games getting into the finalists is because there isn't much competition in this field - you only see games based around well-known franchises, and with nothing coming from individual works. (The only exception is Blair Witch, which was popular enough anyway.)

How about: "Best Movie Based on a Game"?

    Or even: "Best Machinima Movie"?

Or better still: "Most original game not based on a movie, toy, book, etc."?
  • Has anyone in the history of the MTV Movie Awards ever decided to view a movie based solely on the fact that it won an award from MTV? The award itself is merely an excuse to provide programming that allows MTV to parade a bunch of celebrities and fill up about a weeks worth of programming with reruns. I can't really imagine a "Winner of MTV Movie Award for Best Video Game" sticker really adding much selling power to a product, whether you're an avid gamer or a member of the "general public".

    IMHO, Spi
    • It is all a power grab, I think. By the time they start awarding these titles to the movie inspired games -- surprise, surprise -- the DVD version of the said movie will probably be hitting the shelves.

It is a nice way to gain "assets" (marketing money, the stars of the movies, brand association, legitimacy, and so on) out of the movie industry, and help the award spectacle in general.

Maybe I'm cynikal, but c'mon. A musuc channel, on its music award show selecting best video games, and the games they aw

And the Slashdot Award for Worst New Award Category goes to...
  • ...XBOX 360??.

While the sole criteria for the MTV Movie Awards is entertainment & marketing hype (most certainly not content), I honestly think this award is something NOBODY cares about. Does anyone remember the train wreck that was the SpikeTV Video Game Awards? With categories like: Most addictive game fueled by Dew" presented by Virgin Mobile and Moutain Dew.

Yeah, nobody cared about that show either...

I don't think it's a revelation to point out that this "award" is simply an advertisemen
    • Award shows have always been nothing other than marketing wank. I seriously don't know why anyone watches any award show.
      • The SAG (Screen Actors' Guild) is actually worth watching because it is the actors themselves who decide who wins the award. Many actors have indicated that it is a greater honor to receive a SAG award than it is to receive an Oscar or Golden Globe.

I'm not sure who votes on the awards at the GDC, but if it is the developers themselves, I'm sure it is an equally great honor.

The thing is, it's not the GDC Award Show that is going to get ANY air-time whatsoever. Unfortunately, if we want to see a game
  • Let's review what they have:
    * Spider-Man 2 (Activision)
    * Chronicles of Riddick: Escape from Butcher Bay (Vivendi Universal Games)
    * Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban (EA)
    * Van Helsing (Vivendi Universal Games)
    * Incredibles (THQ)

Now, Spider-Man 2 was apparently OK because the core gameplay (not related to the movie stuff) was acceptable. It wasn't super awesome, though. Riddick was good (it was done by a house focused on gaming, and whose deadlines were not tethered to a release date), and then the
    • Beyond Good and Evil was a fantastic game that unfortunately got nothing near the attention it deserved. If anything, the press ignored that game.
      • I agree Beyond Good and Evil was a fantastic game but the game press did give it attention 88% on Gamerankins it's a good score. But infortunally most buyers don't read the game press so most games sell on marketing or name recognition only some truly fenomenal games can escape the lack of good markting.
      • Yeah, it's Startropics Syndrome all over again. Beyond Good and Evil was a fantastic game.

One out now that is in danger of slipping through the cracks is Psychonauts, check it out.
        • Psychonauts is well worth buying. I, er, 'acquired' the game a few days ago and decided to actually buy it earlier today. You can buy it (semi) direct from the developers as well, via their online store [doublefine.com]. You can even get it signed.

Amusingly enough, I also own Beyond Good and Evil and both Startropics games. I wish more gamers were like me. Then maybe we wouldn't see so many lame games like Project Snowblind or Wrestlemania 21.
    • Totally agree. Out of that list, Chronicles of Riddick is the only one I'd even take a second glance at. Of course, apparently the console version of Spiderman was MUCh better then the PC version so that may make a difference.

Will ET get a lifetime achievement award in this category?
  • I stopped watching the MTV movie awards when Keanu Reeves won Best Actor. [eonline.com]
  • It could be "Best Movie Based on a Videogame". I don't think Uwe Boll needs any more encouragement.
