No, it does not give away most fot he plot. If anything, the "Mystery" trailer released last week gives away more of the plot. This one, from a plot perspective, focuses on the romance, which we all know is happenning anyway.

I have been very carefull not to read spoilers online. I have watched all the trailers and I can safely say that I don't feel spoiled.

I am thinking specifcally thinking of Sigfreid. This raised all kinds of uproar at the time of it's premier because of the way that it it went counter to the morals of the day (regarding forbidden loves, etc).

Shhh, don't tell anyone I told you so, but the twist is that Anakin and Amidala turn out to be brother and sister. I know it's been done, but George felt he hadn't explored the full Greek Tragedy aspects of it in 4-6. And besides, it explains a lot about Luke's strangely batrachian features and his own penchant for sister-groping.

Hey, I'll give you the plot of the whole film.

Mainly Geogre Lucas will be making much money by recycling an old and braindead SCI-FI movie be creating new films on the topic which contain no decent storyline but much special effects and computer animated pictures. Because the ending of the last movie of the old ones had left no sensible possibility to create any sequels, Mr. Lucas will have the innovative and cunning idea of creating prequels.
And now the most important thing of the plot: many coloured things will expode (especially in vacuum with a loud "kaboom !). And some guys will jump around.

      • Mr. Lucas will have the innovative and cunning idea of creating prequels.

The really clever bit is the way he avoided carefully making any reference to anything that happens in the prequels when he made 4-6, so that the prequels appear to be non-canon and irrelevant at best, contradictory at worst. That was some forethought, George!

I'm taking bets that Jar Jar turns out to be Boba Fett. Then the rape of my childhood memories will be complete.

    • Because the ending of the last movie of the old ones had left no sensible possibility to create any sequels, Mr. Lucas will have the innovative and cunning idea of creating prequels.

So since we already have sequels to these movies, does that mean the next three are going to be episode -2, -1 and 0? Maybe he will just renumber them again. :)

Works with Galeon, Moz, Netscape, and KDE 2.2.2 (currently in CVS).

Proprietary license, but most code is given right back to the Wine project. In fact, Codeweavers seems to be almost THE Wine project - founder Alexander Julliard and many other core Wine developers earn their living at Codeweavers. So they seem good for the community.

From the AOTC script stolen from the Lucasfilm offices, we have Anakin's (Annie's) reply:

If Fox manages to pull off a simultaneous theatrical release in major markets and then a simultaneous DVD release in major markets, Fox won't be able to hide behind the "staggered release schedule" argument for region lockout. Once AOTC hits second-run theaters, why don't we all go ask Fox to make the DVD region-free?

This also shows you why Anakin ends up going to the dark side and how the conflict starts. This isn't just some tacked on plot.

Yes, but does the love story in AOTC involve incestuous themes? Any brothers and sisters, like in the originals?
    • All I've got to say is the next movie better be dark. I will give Lucus the whole love story thing in ATOTC. TPM sucked, except for Darth Mule of course. But the next movie better be dark.

And when I say dark I don't mean "my isn't the night sky lovely tonight". I mean "MY God! They just shoot they poor guys dog!" dark.

I mean I want to see Dark Vader come out taking candy from babies, kicking old ladies down stairs, pulling on Yoda's ears will singing the theme to South Park.

Just showing the love-story part of the movie hardly is revealing the plot of the movie. But I have a feeling that we're in for a big surprise when the movie comes around in May. Getting to see the Clone Wars in action will definately be a treat, in a war of Jedi against Mandalorians (the race whom Boba Fett's armor originates), Jedi against Dark Jedi, etc.

To me, the Clone Wars is the ultimate climax of the Star Wars Universe. Luke defeating Vader pales in comparison.

All the griping I've read about how "horrible" Episode I was, and Episode II will be, makes me think that people who think that aren't looking at the movies with the right attitude.

"Great cinema" they are not. But these movies aren't intended to be Schindler's List or Saving Private Ryan. If you want that kind of movie, go see it. This isn't it, and it isn't intended to be it.

I saw Episode I several times in the theater, and I now own the DVD, and I've enjoyed the use of the money I spent.

I went to see Episode I looking for several things:

    - Cool special effects
    - A decently entertaining script
    - A great light sabre battle at the end
    - The first part of a story whose ending I already know

I got every one of those things, and I was very pleased.

I didn't expect Oscar-quality acting, spine-tingling plot lines, statements on the human condition, or exploration of some societal quandry. I didn't get them. Star Wars isn't that kind of movie; it isn't intended as that kind of movie.

Star Wars is a series of movies where you don't have to think real hard about them. Sometimes I want a movie that will challenge me (Schindler's List, Philadelphia). Sometimes it can be fun to just turn your brain off and watch something mindlessly amusing (Something About Mary, Rollerball (the original), A Knight's Tale, Logan's Run). Star Wars is in this second category.

Whether or not you enjoy Star Wars Episode II for what it is, I think, depends a lot on what you expect.
    • No no no... Star Wars is in a category of those rare movies that while they don't make you think much they're original. People keep complaining about star wars "being done before". Yeah in the 70s with the first movies, Lucas has a right to build off that, he can't steal his own idea! That said I loved Episode I. It wasn't anything like I expected it to be (which may be everyone's problem). And after seeing these trailers, I know the E II is going to be even better.. can't wait until May!
    • by startled ( 144833 )
Yes, I appeal to you, masses-- lower your standards! They are too high! People can make shit and you can enjoy it, if you simply lower your opinion of people.

No thanks. You try to imply that people expected "Oscar-quality acting, spine-tingling plot lines, statements on the human condition, or exploration of some societal quandry", but that's obvious hyperbole. People wanted another movie that would exhilarate them the same way the first three movies did. Those movies did an amazing job of catching you up in them right from the beginning with stunning new environments, interesting (but not confusing) plots, and just enough of the mystical to further inspire a sense of wonder and awe-- combined with some fabulous action.

What'd we get in ep. 1? Boring shots of crap we could care less about. Uninteresting locales. Dehumanized acting (the largest damning factor, I think). Honestly, the only enjoyable part was the 2-on-1 light saber battle. Take all that, bad enough as it is, and toss in Jar-Jar, who damns so obviously and in so many ways that I don't even need to delve into it.

So no, I won't lower my standards. I won't be so easily amused. Instead, I'll simply go watch good movies, and if the new Star Wars movies continue to suck, so be it. In many cases, it's not the sequels (prequels, whatever) that carry on the spiritual legacy of a fabulous movie. It's the new movies made by new people who still want to do something new and exciting and better-- not just try to be as good as what they've done before.
    • Contrary to what others have said, Schindler's List was thought provoking. Some lessons I learned:

While it's true that attitude is a lot of the problem with the way that people are viewing the prequels, The Phantom Menace left a lot to be desired for me. I don't consider myself a Star Wars fan in that I read any related books (although I have leafed through a few that my borther has), but I worship episodes 4-6, because they are an adventure story and an allegory. In fact, I watced A New Hope in my tenth grade English class as an example of the genre of adventure stories, and we analyzed it for archetypes.

The problem I have with The Phantom Menace is manyfold, but mostly it comes down to the fact that it didn't do a good job of setting up the allegory of Star Wars for episodes 4-6. Now, my oppinion of The Phantom Menace is largely dependant on the semantics of how Anakin turns to the dark side. The title "Attack of the Clones" isn't very encouraging to me in that regard. The first thing that came to mind was "Attack of the Killer Tomotoes" -- why coulnd't the episode simply be name, "The Clone Wars?"

On that note, I loved a few things about The Phantom Menace, but only if "Attack of the Clones" and episode 3 deal with them properly:

      • The fact that Anakin will in fact bring balance to the force, but not the way that the paranoid Jedi council, who is haunted by perceptions of the Sith and other bad things as outnumbering them, imagines.
      • Anakin merely wants to free the slaves on Tatooine -- how will Palpatine warp innocent Anakin into the evil Darth Vader?
      • The council on Coruscant was manipulated by Palpatine to vote him as their leader in order to resotre order and justice against the "evil men," as Fearless Leader #43 would say, of the Trade Federation: what kind of new order will Palpatine enforce. This should be a big opportunity for Lucas to comment on how the "war" against terrorism is being used, much like the "war" against drugs, to curtail civil liberties.

There are many others, but those are the ones that come to mind at the moment. The problem is, with the whole Jar Jar debacle, I don't know if I can trust Lucas with his own story -- perhaps I'm looking too deeply into the Star Wars saga, but there's much more there than simply cool special effects, comedy, and neato light saber battles.

  • ...explains where those damned doughnut shaped ear-muffs Leia wore in Star Wars came from!
    • I thought the exact same thing!

Funny, though, I seem to recall Lucas saying that he'd really like to do a new special edition of SWIV, where he gets rid of the danish pastry hairdo on Leia and the '70s Sean Cassidy look on Luke. Guess he changed his mind.
  • by chazzf ( 188092 )
Was I the only one here who thought that the trailer boded well for Episode II? Grow up, people, and consider that what you saw made some sense. If Anakin is truly in love with Amidala and Obi-Wan nails him with Jedi rhetoric it is entirely understandable that he'd be pissed. We KNOW that the Skywalkers are an unstable family anyway...

As for the complaints about acting, I think we all forget the wonderfully talented Oscar-level performance of Mark Hamill has whiny-boy, er, Luke Skywalker. Saying that "you've grown" seems entirely appropriate for the situation. Similarly, "I'll be the greatest Jedi ever" is exactly the sort of thing an angry unstable twenty-something whose mad at the galaxy would say in a moment of duress.

Finally, the action scenes are looking reasonably decent. Anyone else notice Boba Fett? Christopher Lee? If Lee does his usual good turn it should be a lot fun. Finally, NO Jar-Jar anywhere in the trailer. This is a Good Thing. More than anything, I think it suggests that Lucas listened to the public outcry about said abomination.
